Mock trialI taught Law & Government while at Providence St. Mel. As part of the class, each year I prepared a team of students to compete in the Illinois State Bar Association Mock Trial competition in Springfield, Illinois. Students prepared oral arguments and questions, interacted with professional judges and attorneys, and faced off against their peers from schools from every corner of the state.

JournalismStudents who take my journalism class learn what it means to be a modern media professional. Over the course of the school year, they publish both a monthly newspaper and an annual yearbook. By working with outside groups such as the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, they leave my classroom with the writing and editing skills necessary to succeed at the university level,
whether at J-School or elsewhere. |
Student governmentStudents must have a voice in their own education. With this in mind, I sponsored North Lawndale College Prep's first ever Student Government organization. Students ran for office, learned to hold meetings, organized school events, and advocated for their peers. By directly experiencing democracy while in school, these students head out into the world better prepared to be active citizens.
